A stay at Ken Lodge offered us our first opportunity to savour some exciting wildlife up close - one of our main passions while travelling.
The late-finishing monsoon had other ideas, the land slow to drain, and the Panna National Park was off-limits for us, not quite ready for the tigers, leopards and other assorted creatures we'd hoped to spot.
A night safari through the Ken Lodge estate threw up a few shy antelopes, lots of busy foxes and birds and even a retreating family of porcupines, but no wow factor, certainly nothing dangerous.
Still, plenty more opportunities as we move down country.
A short drive out to Raneh Waterfall with guide Shanker Lal Mishra. Some nice photo opps and intriguing landscapes - one for the geologists, if not the naturalists.
As slim consolation, our guide rustled up a couple of temples and a fort on our trip out of town. Hmm.
It's in the trees! Maybe.
